Baklava

Ingredients

  • 16 sheets phyllo pastry
  • 250 g walnuts
  • 250 g pistachios
  • 200 g butter
  • 150 g sugar
  • 200 ml honey
  • 200 ml water
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Finely chop walnuts and pistachios, mix with cinnamon and cloves
  2. Melt butter and brush 9x13 baking pan
  3. Layer 2 phyllo sheets, brush with butter between each layer
  4. Spread thin layer of nut mixture, top with 2 phyllo sheets
  5. Repeat layering until nuts and phyllo are used, ending with phyllo
  6. Score the top into diamond or square shapes
  7. Bake at 160°C for 40-45 minutes until golden
  8. Make syrup: combine sugar, water, honey, cinnamon, and cloves, simmer 15 mins, add lemon juice
  9. Pour hot syrup over hot baklava immediately after removing from oven
  10. Cool completely before cutting along scored lines
