Baklava (Turkish Version)

Ingredients

  • 20 sheets phyllo pastry
  • 300 g walnuts
  • 200 g butter
  • 200 g sugar
  • 300 ml water
  • 200 ml honey
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.5 tsp cardamom
  • 2 whole clove

Instructions

  1. Finely chop walnuts, mix with cinnamon and cardamom
  2. Melt butter and brush into 9x13 baking pan
  3. Layer phyllo sheets one at a time, brushing each with melted butter
  4. After 10 sheets, spread thin layer of nut mixture
  5. Add 2 more phyllo sheets with butter between
  6. Spread remaining nuts, then top with remaining phyllo sheets, buttering each
  7. Score top into triangular or diamond shapes without cutting all the way through
  8. Bake at 160°C for 40-45 minutes until golden brown
  9. Make syrup: combine sugar, water, and cloves, simmer 10 minutes, add honey
  10. Pour hot syrup over hot baklava immediately after removing from oven
