Dal Fry (Simple Lentil Curry)

Ingredients
- 1 cup toor dal or moong dal
- 3 cups water
- 0.5 tsp turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 medium onions, finely chopped
- 2 medium tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1-2 green chilies, finely chopped
- 2 tbsp oil or ghee
- 0.5 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 0.5 tsp red chili powder
- 0.5 tsp garam masala
- Fresh coriander for garnish
Instructions
- Wash dal thoroughly
- Pressure cook dal with 3 cups water, turmeric and salt for 4-5 whistles
- Mash lightly, should be thick and creamy
- Heat oil, add cumin seeds and let splutter
- Add onions and sauté till light golden
- Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, cook till raw smell is gone
- Add tomatoes and cook till soft
- Add coriander powder, chili powder and salt
- Sauté for 1-2 minutes
- Add cooked dal and 1 cup water
- Bring to boil and simmer for 10 minutes
- Add garam masala
- Garnish with fresh coriander
- Serve hot with rice, roti or bread
