Dal Fry (Simple Lentil Curry)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup toor dal or moong dal
  • 3 cups water
  • 0.5 tsp turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 medium onions, finely chopped
  • 2 medium tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1-2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp oil or ghee
  • 0.5 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 0.5 tsp red chili powder
  • 0.5 tsp garam masala
  • Fresh coriander for garnish

Instructions

  1. Wash dal thoroughly
  2. Pressure cook dal with 3 cups water, turmeric and salt for 4-5 whistles
  3. Mash lightly, should be thick and creamy
  4. Heat oil, add cumin seeds and let splutter
  5. Add onions and sauté till light golden
  6. Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, cook till raw smell is gone
  7. Add tomatoes and cook till soft
  8. Add coriander powder, chili powder and salt
  9. Sauté for 1-2 minutes
  10. Add cooked dal and 1 cup water
  11. Bring to boil and simmer for 10 minutes
  12. Add garam masala
  13. Garnish with fresh coriander
  14. Serve hot with rice, roti or bread
