Kokum Curry (Sour Curry)

Ingredients

  • 8-10 kokum pieces
  • 2 cups thick coconut milk
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 0.5 tsp cumin seeds
  • 0.5 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1-2 green chilies, slit
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 8-10 curry leaves
  • Water as needed

Instructions

  1. Soak kokum in 0.5 cup hot water for 10-15 minutes, extract juice and discard pulp
  2. Heat coconut oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and let splutter
  3. Add cumin and curry leaves, fry briefly
  4. Add onion and sauté till soft
  5. Add green chilies and turmeric powder
  6. Add extracted kokum juice and 1 cup water
  7. Bring to boil and simmer for 5 minutes
  8. Add coconut milk slowly, stirring gently
  9. Add salt and sugar
  10. Simmer on low for 5 more minutes without boiling
  11. Serve hot with steamed rice
  12. This is a light, sour, coastal South Indian dish
